2018 Mitsubishi Outlander

The popular Mitsubishi SUV, the Mitsubishi Outlander, has been doing fairly well during 2017, with the automaker hitting record sales twice thus far. Now entering the 2018 model year, the Outlander is still as strong as its previous model, with many features shared across the lineup and welcome upgrades for various trims. The largest changes can be found in the technology for entertainment and advanced safety.

Engine Types

The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander is made up of four trims – ES 2.4, SE 2.4, SEL 2.4, and GT 3.0; two drivetrain options – front-wheel drive and (super) all-wheel control; and two engines. The standard engine found on the first three trims is a 2.4-liter I4 engine designed with Mitsubishi’s own variable valve timing (VVT) technology (MIVEC), that helps optimize the engine’s horsepower and increases fuel economy. The vehicles with this engine generate 166 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The Outlander GT 3.0 is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 with MIVEC, and it is able to generate up to 224 horsepower and 215 lb-ft of torque.

Driving and Fuel Economy

The two drivetrain options are technically three considering one is just an advanced version of the other. The standard drivetrain on the first three trims is front-wheel drive, but consumers can upgrade to all-wheel control (AWC) with the Outlander ES 2.4, and super all-wheel control (S-AWC) with the Outlander SE 2.4 and Outlander SEL 2.4. The AWC drivetrain is Mitsubishi’s version of all-wheel drive for total driver control in various driving conditions. The Outlander GT 3.0 comes locked into the S-AWC drivetrain.

Following the same pattern as the engine, the first three trims of the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander are equipped with Mitsubishi’s continuously variable transmission (CVT), and that helps the vehicle get the best fuel economy available. The three  Outlander trims equipped with the 2.4L engine have a fuel economy of 25/30 mpg city/highway. The Outlander GT 3.0 is paired to an electronic 6-speed transmission instead of the Sportronic transmission that it had in 2017. The Outlander GT 3.0 has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 22 mpg.
